Gender Roles In The Great Gatsby And The Sun Also Rises

In all forms of literature, there are usually common concepts that helps further the plot, also known as a theme. When reading all the literary works In all the literary works assigned to us in class, each having a different author, expresses a common theme.The authors force us to examine the limitation of conventional gender roles and how they express this in each story. The literary works that specifically include this theme of gender roles are,The Sun also Rises by Ernest Hemingway , The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. All the works are written around the same time, the 1920’s, which gives the reader an idea of the aftermath of the World War at that time and how its affect on†¦show more content†¦This shows the independence and freedom women were starting to get back then. Brett is both masculine and feminine in the story but mostly shows more of here masculine side throughout. The war was a major reason wh y women resulted in having to fulfill the masculine role, because men would be affected by the war emotionally or physically. Hemingway uses Jake as a example of loss, by taking away his ability to have sex.Ever since this loss forced Jake to change his view on masculinity. Jakes is wanted by many women but cant have physical relations with him due to his injury. Hemingway provides us with a description that shows Jakes problem with his masculinity. In chapter 3, Hemingway writes,â€Å"looked up to be kissed. She touched me with one hand and I put her hand away. Never mind. What’s the matter? You sick? Everybody’s sick. I’m sick too.(Hemingway 23).This quotes shows Jake incapability for sexual actions as that the main reason why him and Brett cant and didnt end up together. In the The Great Gatsby, women are portrayed as weak with no control of their lives. She is represented as the stereotype that women were categorized back then, pretty and obedient to their husbands. Daisy shows this by the way she is loyal to Tom.
